For the second consecutive year, General Mohammed Buba Marwa, Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), has been celebrated as the Man of the Year. In a continent often hindered by weak leadership in security and law enforcement, General Marwa has proven to be a transformative figure. Since taking charge of the NDLEA, he has redefined the battle against drug trafficking and abuse, not only within Nigeria but across Africa, achieving unparalleled success in a remarkably short period.

The twin evils of drug abuse and cybercrime pose a grave danger to Nigeria's society, economy, and future. Drug addiction ravages the physical and mental health of individuals, particularly the youth, who are the backbone of the nation's future. It fosters a cycle of crime, unemployment, and despair, weakening families and communities. Similarly, cybercrime undermines trust in the digital economy, deters foreign investment, and tarnishes Nigeria's global reputation. These issues are not just individual or societal problems—they are national emergencies that require coordinated and sustained efforts.

General Marwa has tackled the drug menace head-on, employing intelligence-driven operations, technology integration, and international cooperation to dismantle drug networks and safeguard Nigerian youth. His results-oriented approach has resulted in an unprecedented number of arrests and drug seizures, creating a safer environment for future generations. However, the fight against drugs and cybercrime must be framed as a public good—a collective responsibility essential for the health, security, and prosperity of the entire nation.

A society free from drugs and cybercrime thrives economically and socially. By prioritizing these issues as public goods, Nigeria can create a foundation for sustainable development, economic resilience, and social cohesion. Fighting drugs and cybercrime is not just about law enforcement; it is about investing in the future. It protects young Nigerians from falling into destructive paths and fosters a society where innovation, creativity, and integrity can flourish.

As part of its future strategy, the NDLEA should incorporate robust social programs to discourage youth from drug use. Community outreach initiatives, education campaigns, skill development programs, and mental health support systems can address the root causes of drug abuse and provide alternatives for at-risk individuals. Similarly, the fight against cybercrime should include education on digital ethics and skills, equipping young Nigerians to contribute positively to the digital economy.

As we commend General Marwa and the NDLEA for their remarkable achievements, we urge all Nigerians to see the fight against drugs and cybercrime as a shared responsibility. We wish General Marwa and the NDLEA a prosperous and impactful 2025. May their efforts continue to set a standard for leadership and innovation, ensuring a brighter and more secure future for Nigeria and the entire continent.
